“But otherwise, whoever wins the capital-D Democratic primary will go on to win the general election, because it’s California.”
So. Fucking. What?
The general election doesn’t exist to give you horse-race entertainment. The purpose of it isn’t to be exciting. The purpose is to elect a leader.
The general election being boring isn’t a problem that needed solving.
The purpose of a primary is internal to a party. Let’s field 17 democrats and see which one we want to put our effort behind, and then we, as a party, will be disciplined in November and give voters one choice so that we don’t split our vote.
And, things change. People change, the Democratic Party changes. It’s stupid to bake into a law the assumption that one party will always win the governorship.
And things can change between June and November. What if a scandal emerges? The party has no control after June. The candidates are locked. So again i say, the general election is actually in June.
