@aura @eamon for about $40 a piece i can easily recommend the Wio Tracker L1 Pro, or, if weather sealing is a concern, the SenseCap T1000-E for Meshtastic with the caveat that it can't talk to older SX1272-based devices (but other clients rebroadcasting your message from T1000-E → SX1262 → SX1272 and the reverse path works)
there's also RakWireless stuff that looks nice but i haven't found good EU resellers, probably easier to get in the US but also probably more expensive
or i guess for the cheapest option there's always Heltec V3 devkits but I can't in good conscience recommend an ESP32-based device for portable use (they're too power hungry)

@traumaphoenix @aura @eamon agreed; I’ve been looking into a similar use case (a device each for friends at a UK music festival with terrible cell coverage), and the battery life of esp32 devices is terrible. If you need to use them all day you’ve got to look at the nrf-based gear (or keep a big battery to hand).
