I suspect there was more hope that it would be possible in the time of the Forge thanks to the possibility of meeting new people who share your interests online. Though the way platforms evolved afterward, well... made it harder again.

I very much think that is the current tension in my local shop. Lots of people want to find people and into a face to face group, but they are finding there are no mechanism for doing so, and all the group matching type forums/sites are dead or ghost towns. @pteryx @Taskerland
