As part of de-Googling last year, I moved from Google Maps to OSMAnd+. Oh man. OSMAnd+ is less of a Google Maps replacement and more of a full-on mobile #GIS tool that also happens to do (offline) navigation, #GPX recording/exporting, and a seemingly endless amount of configuration. As the name suggests, it uses #OpenStreetMap. I am genuinely impressed. It does have a couple quirks. The #navigation and #route planning sections could be more intuitive. But those aside, OSMAnd+ has become my default mapping/navigation app. #osmand #osmandplus #map

@peteorrall Oh, thanks for mentioning this. I use OSMAND in the forest, and hsave been thinking that I should use it in other places, too.

@peteorrall checking out now! Also, GMap gets worse and worse. Like, some of the routes are CLEARLY not optimal. I keep thinking they're gonna release a paid version for "actually good routes", and the free one is shit and burns energy...which will be sponsored by energy companies etc. #doubletapping #ahaha

@peteorrall see, this is my problem. I don’t want a mobile GIS tool, nor do I want configuability. I just want a convenient accurate map. Apple Maps isn’t great but it’s closer than OSMAnd.

@peteorrall If only they added some public transport options... Magic Earth (using OSM as a backend) has a much more comprehensive set for moving around in public transport. It however isnt FOSS CoMaps is also OSM based and it is aware of the existence of the tube. It has that going for it. But then again. Probably different usage and needs for everyone

@peteorrall OsmAnd+ is impressive for its wealth of features, but for navigation I prefer CoMaps, which is both lighter and easier to use (and I find that route calculation works better in CoMaps).

@peteorrall if you’re ever looking for something more simple, I can highly recommend CoMaps, it’s a fork of another project and I’ve found it really useful for walking directions, as well as being able to download entire countries.

@peteorrall does it offer realtime traffic? I feel like that's one of G-Maps' still killer features (one of the only ones, at this point).
