@virtuosew There are obviously a bunch of ravens in the GRRM books but also, in the excellent 'A Wizard of Earthsea' the Archmage Nemmerle has a large white raven as his familiar. But he's not the protagonist.

@benchessell It's pre-GRRM, I think. I've not knowingly read GRRM - warned off by the blood and gore! - but I've been told he writes like a poet. The book I'm looking for was competently written, but it was the story, not the language, that attracted.
