@benchessell It's pre-GRRM, I think. I've not knowingly read GRRM - warned off by the blood and gore! - but I've been told he writes like a poet. The book I'm looking for was competently written, but it was the story, not the language, that attracted.

@virtuosew I am neither recommending nor un-recommending GRRM. I am, however, double recommending 'A Wizard of Earthsea' by Ursula LeGuin as one of the best books not only of fantasy but of any kind. Ever. It's a beautiful, beautiful book written by a master writer. Only in silence the word, Only in dark the light, Only in dying life: Bright the hawk's flight on the empty sky.
