@Coho male and female flowers have different structures. Careful examination will show this. Male parts produce pollen, female parts receive pollen-they are sticky. Trees that self pollinate must have both sex structures somewhere in the flower.
No fruit unless pollen (sperm) get to ovary (egg). Unless the plant is "parthenocarpic" in which case pollination is not required. I'm not aware of any parthenocarpic avocados, but it's possible they exist

@deepmud So an individual avocado flower would need both parts. I have pineapple guavas that get showy flowers but don't produce fruit. I shall have a look and see if they have both parts. Some people insist pineapple guavas are self pollinating , but others say you need a male and female. I'm going to look into it more. The shrubs are quite large. I want fruit!
