Plot twists suck when they come out of nowhere. They work best when hinted at first, because the audience is given a chance to work out the gist of it. Even if they don't, when it's revealed, there's that moment of "ohhh, that makes so much sense!" If it's barely connected or not at all, the audience tends to not say "oh shit" but rather "where the fuck did that come from?" or "why would they do that?" The mere existence of a twist isn't good enough. You have to lead the audience to believe one thing and the twist comes from a reinterpretation of the same information. Usually whatever new information is revealed to make the twist clear, isn't new but just clarifies something the audience already knew (or at the very least is something they can believe would happen, like "oh yeah that's totally something they'd do").
