@pathunstrom I hate the position this person is expousing so much. "Question everything!" Absolutely, ponder things from whatever angle you are able to, try and understand the how and the why behind it, but that is not their position is it? Their "question everything" is, "don't think about how or why; demand an explanation for everything you don't like", which is more or less the opposite.

@pathunstrom for those kinds of people: it's always fine too question rules on your own time. that's good and fine and healthy to do cause in the process you can learn why rules are in place and what rules and values are important to the community and to you. but if you join a community and then try to re-litigate every rule they established without even knowing why they exist or how they work in practice, you become a problem for those trying to run a community smoothly with limited time and energy. be respectful of other people's time and energy and make an effort to understand things before you bother them about it. also the hypothetical fringe case you're making up in your head to immediately question a rule probably doesn't actually exist in real life or isn't that fringe in the first place (see the part about where those going to bat for the freeze peach of fascists or who are going to argue why xy bigot isn't technically a fascist, etc. are going to be toxic for a community regardless of whether they themselves are fascists). if you find yourself wildly disagreeing with the rules of a community immediately that community probably isn't for you and instead of getting yourself banned trying to argue why they should change every rule for you you can save yourself and them the time and trouble and just not join. it's always fine to just leave.

@pathunstrom This is really clever! That's similar to what we call a "honeypot" in cybersecurity. A honeypot is a server in a controlled, isolated environment containing data that appears to be legitimate. With the purpose of luring attackers to target this server instead of the real one. That way information security analysts can detect vulnerabilities, recognize patterns and understand the attackers. That's exactly what the Olivia Hill Rule does 😀. Making people reveal by themselves they won't follow the rules.
