I want to share something because it has made me happy but also because it gives hope: academics are citing my "Frugal Computing" paper. This is remarkable because it only exists as a preprint and was not published in any reputable venue (*). I put it on arXiv in 2023, and of all paper I published since then it has the most citations (**). (1/3) #FrugalComputing

One interesting point is that the content of the paper is the same as my blog post https://limited.systems/articles/frugal-computing/, which I wrote in 2021 and I am sure has a much wider reach than the arXiv version. But what this shows is that you can publish a paper outside of the traditional venues, and it will still reach your peers. It also shows to me personally that a "blog-firs" approach is the right thing to do. (2/3) #FrugalComputing

@efialto Thanks for your efforts! "green computing" is very dated term, it's what I used 15 years ago or so. The most common terms today are sustainable computing and low carbon computing. Wikipedia needs to get with the times ^_^ If you would get around to it, let me know how I can help.

@efialto I understand. How many references would be enough?

  • @wim_v12e This is a fantastic paper and well deserved that it is being cited by others. When I return to post-grad academia I'm sure I'll be needing to cite this as well!
