Ochre spring in the ancient woodland in Sheffield. Smell of iron and sulphur coming off it - apparently the iron is carried bound to sulphur in anoxic conditions, and as soon as it hits the air the two dissociate.
Clear waters smelling of blood and staining the earth red is a pretty potent atavistic mix. A good recipe for old gods.

This effect is often seen near old mines, but there aren't any marked out in the area so it could well natural (or just Old-old - this area has evidence of neolithic and iron age habitation, and was then worked from the medieval period on). There is a shallow coal seam running through the area, because of course there is - coal and iron ore are the reason Sheffield is what it is, after all.
