Oh no, dear author. Great article-- but this part, this part you got very VERY wrong.
"(Someone is going to object that Google should have filtered this stuff out, and yes, sure, but also, "the people creating the pollution aren't at fault because the EPA should have caught it" has never been a great argument.)"
Google is not the EPA here. Google is not only NOT "catching" this shit, they're THROWING it everywhere as hard as they possibly can. Google wrecked its OWN search results, ON PURPOSE, by amplifying all this useless bullshit and steering people AWAY from real or useful sites and products in favor of whatever grifts grease their palms the most.
Google is very, very much st fault because this entire situation is exactly what they wanted. Shit, even boolean search terms don't actually work anymore! They took a search engine and turned it into a bullshit-riddled hall of advertising mirrors.
Growth is coming to a close. It's getting harder to extract anything from a world that's already being ruthlessly squeezed. Capitalism is collapsing. They're stuffing the Line with hollow scams so it continues to look like it's going Up. When this whole "AI" bubble finally goes, it's going to look a lot more than 1929 than 2008. The people responsible know it, and they're poised to catch profits from everyone else's devastation.
