@Fishd Agreed, it would be a better experience. I guess they don't make it default since there's a small risk involved that a user forcibly restarts their machine at the wrong moment (like pressing the power button during the installation of updates). There are "Inhibitors" in place that prevent a restart from within the system during the installation of updates.

@Fishd @patnat Because it's not safe. Traditional package updates are inherently unsafe operations, but the more Other Stuff is running on the system when they run, the less safe they are. The safest thing is to have as little Other Stuff running as possible when doing the update, hence the offline update default. Desktops are especially prone to crashing in the middle of the update and taking it with them. Online updating is always possible, but we default to the safest available choice.
