@garland @Lkdc The acronym they want is MVNO; those are companies that sell phone plans for much lower cost than the big providers, but still using their network.
For the family, in the past we've used Ting and a few others. The kids and wife are on redpocket annual plans - $30/yr for each of the kids' plans (unlimited talk/text, and 200MB of data per month), and my wife's got $180/yr plan w/ unlimited talk/text and 5GB of data.
I'm on a data-only jmp.chat plan; $7/gb that never expires.

@garland @Lkdc One thing redpocket doesn't allow you to do is tethering, but otherwise it's been perfectly reliable. https://www.ebay.com/itm/136840233242 https://www.ebay.com/itm/133058473014 The jmp.chat sim really only makes sense if you're using something like google voice or their SMS/Calls-over-jabber offerings (basically a paid equivalent of google voice). But search reddit or something for MVNO plans that make sense for what you're looking for; there's all kinds of monthly and yearly prepaid plans out there.
