But is car stream-lining a factor in this ? My impression is that car windscreens have generally become more slanted, perhaps taking the airflow and insects over instead of into them ?

@GeofCox It was the same German car, for 20 years. Nowadays, that one is likely scrap, but windscreen not a factor as it did not change.
