Re: the BA flight. As a small child I flew over that volcano several times (we lived in Jakarta, Indonesia for a few years), and even visited it on the ground once. Got to see it erupting, from a safe distance. Not sure if it was the same eruption that affected that flight, but it would have been a similar time frame.
So that story always strikes a particular chord with me :)

@andrewwillmott @TomF @dysfun My most memorable one was when we boarded a plane, and got an announcement that sorry, the plane is broken, we have to switch to another one.. So everyone shuffles out, boards the secon plane, sat down, waited, and got the announcement from the pilot, in a very annoyed voice: "Ladies and gentlemen, this has never happened before, they gave me another broken plane". They managed to fix whatever was wrong and we were away, but it was still an experience.
