@felwert @mpe That's not bad. When I think of a somewhat simplified word processor like the one in Google Docs, it's easy enough to imagine (almost) all its output being expressible as Markdown. But I bet people would complain about all the missing features they're used to from MS-Word.

    @mike @mpe Right, in the end, something like the Pandoc AST could be a good basis for a deliberately reduced document model for scholarly articles. Markdown is just currently the easiest way to edit that AST. A few years ago, there were multiple efforts to build “scholarly google docs” systems, mostly based on JATS. But few of them survived, probably supporting your skepticism.
