@mike @mpe Right, in the end, something like the Pandoc AST could be a good basis for a deliberately reduced document model for scholarly articles. Markdown is just currently the easiest way to edit that AST. A few years ago, there were multiple efforts to build “scholarly google docs” systems, mostly based on JATS. But few of them survived, probably supporting your skepticism.

    @felwert @mpe Yes. And to my mind JATS goes too complex for this. On the other hand, Markdown is pretty horrible for tables, so /shrug/
