Here's an idea, instead of going back to gopher, or starting a new non-commercial protocol, or just ditching the internet altogether... we should just build a modern browser to pre-modern standards. Like HTML 4.01 transitional max, CSS 2.1, and maybe ECMAscript 3? HTTP only (gopher and gemini can come too).
I haven't fully thought this out yet, obviously lol

This does nothing to deal with crawlers/scrapers, of course, but as a user, it basically means the Facebooks, Instas, etc's of the world cease to exist, as would virtually 99% of affiliate blogs, corporate websites, and memoirs masquerading as recipes for chicken parm. But something obvious is missing... what if I want to host a site targeting only this weird sub-internet, but inaccessible from the wider www (aka any other modern browser)? Like gemini or gopher, but with stylesheets and images.
