@beecycling @greene I think there need to be some birth centers with pleasant midwives (practiced, licensed), place for family members to gather and all the woo-woo, meditations, candles, music, whatnots with actual doctors not visible but on duty in case stuff goes sideways. There's a reason women don't like giving birth in hospitals, far as I can tell the whole thing is highly traumatizing for everybody involved, doctors are often downright sadistic, dismissive and care is professional but kept to the bare minimum, that at a point in a woman's life where she's probably the most scared she ever was and will be. That's why shit like this can proliferate, the comfort it gives outweighs the possible complications.

    @sahqon @greene I think there are more places like that these days, and units where midwives take the lead, rather than doctors. But that's in the UK. I bet it's a lot different in the US, because of the fear of being sued. I seem to recall hearing that obstetricians have higher premiums for malpractice insurance than any other specialty.
