Today there was something on the radio news about an industry trade fair that feels like a good summary of the whole "generative AI" thing. The reporter was talking about what vendors are showing, and one thing was an "AI powered" factory monitoring tool: "So instead of looking at numbers you can mail with the AI and talk about what might be wrong." It's hard to express just how useless that is. When monitoring a system numbers (and predictable analysis/alerting/graphing on top) is exactly what I want. But: It probably looks great to a manager who has no idea what the numbers and graphs mean and now feels like they understand (not understand, but feels like they do). In short: It looks great as long as you understand neither how the "AI" works nor the field it's being applied to. ​:neocat_glare:​ (Unfortunately neither seemed to apply to the reporter either. ​:neocat_floof_sad:​)
