I'm not talking about someone slacking off and not doing their job. I've had engineers who are amazing and looked up to and do great things, and other managers tell me that that person is "too comfortable" and needs to be pushed outside of their comfort zone.
And I'm like why? They're productive, they're making things better, they are happy, everyone appreciates them and looks up to them? Do they need to be uncomfortable to prove that they are doing enough?

I think that yes, people should push themself outside their comfort zone sometimes, to grow. But more and more I see this weaponized as part of the toxic startup culture. How can we get more out of this person? If they are not collapsing from exhaustion, they are not given it their all. 3/x
