@Canageek My understanding is that the latter is borrowing the term from the former, and kinda making it worse for it.
Purity Culture as a thing about Sex is the more established proper meaning. And using that exact term for the idea of ideological purity (which is then also being applied in shitty ways anyway) is not great, afaik.

@rockario @Canageek I've most seen it on tumblr used for sex-related... fandom discourse? Like people saying that age gap relationships are always problematic (even if the ages in question are e.g. 30 and 35), or that writing the adult version of a character who was a child or teen in the source material means you're a paedophile. So I'd suspect that's how the expansion/watering-down happened.
