My vote would be for getting onto the Matrix platform, as it's decentralised, and people have written clients for both desktop and mobile, but pretty much has similar issues with getting normies onto the Fediverse (finding a home server, understanding how servers interact, encryption, etc etc)

@feff I must say that I find matrix very obtuse, especially when using the same account across multiple devices. I have yet to successfully set it up so I don't get warnings about unauthenticated sessions all the time. I think it's back to jabber.
