For me working out early on was a factor to develop an awareness and consciousness of what's possible today not determining what can be possible in the future. You can literally see the numbers, if you start with 5 or 10 pushups and that's it, and a while later it's already 30, that seems like an enormous gain. The biggest experience in this regard I can point to was not being able to do a single pullup at all, but then trying one every day. It took only a week until I could do a full one. 6/

    And it's not just "training" in the sense of building fitness, that you then lose, once you no longer keep up with the training. Some development is more or less "permanent", or at least very long lasting. Some things are learned and developed once and even if you "decline", you can reach certain states easier and quicker again. Even the "mindset" of being able to improve and having the foresight of "I can do it in a week" instead of "I can not do it (now)" is an example. 7/
