@victorgijsbers@mastodon.gamedev.place This won't apply in Europe, but for US maps I heavily prefer the USGS National Map over anything Google has ever put out: https://apps.nationalmap.gov/viewer/ It's so much easier to see and read with the selection of colors and more informative. It has all the trails, Forest Service roads, and much more. Below I have attached most of Denver, CO and westerly areas, first in the National Map and then in Google Maps.

@victorgijsbers@mastodon.gamedev.place Absolutely! One time, on a trek in the Himalayas, a friend and I took a path that ended up leading us nowhere. Thankfully I'd downloaded offline maps on Google Maps and OSMAnd, and while Google Maps just showed me a green blob (😂), the community on OpenStreetMap had uploaded detailed trekking routes which got us back on the right track and to our destination before the sun went down. I'm so grateful that we're able to take the spirit of human collaboration and translate that into community-owned and managed mapping.

@victorgijsbers@mastodon.gamedev.place I second that on the hiking point. I use mapy.cz for that. However I still struggle to find a good alternative for Google Maps on the whole, try as I may, and trust me, I do. It's just too integrated and useful. OSM and its derivatives are great for certain applications but lack: - public transit route planning - business search, opening hours - restaurant lookup with filters - reviews - photos - streetview

@victorgijsbers@mastodon.gamedev.place I always use OSM-based mapping services for walking/hiking & biking. I always find my way around :-) www.bikerouter.de gives you everything for easily making your track with all the overlays needed. With no laptop available, I use OSMAnd to draw out a track on the phone. When on the road, I prefer Comaps and OSMAnd~ to follow the track. Comaps and OSMAnd~ have also ability to add remarks to or edit the map. @bikerouter@en.osm.town @CoMaps@floss.social @osmandapp@bird.makeup
