Exactly this. Perhaps I’m lucky to have grown up in the Bay Area during the dotcom boom, and then bust. Not only did I own what would probably now be quite valuable pets.com merchandise, I then went on to go to break-in raves in the abandoned offices that were the corpses of these ventures. Perhaps because of this, I’ve always been very skeptical of the technological fads that I’ve since watched so many businesses chase, even when it wasn’t clear how they’d actually benefit their business in the unlikely event they actually panned out. Very few tech companies seem to exist for any traditional business reason. It’s not that they see a need in the market that they have the capacity to fill, or that they’ve come up with a genuine improvement on an existing product, it’s that they see a new toy that might be shiny enough to attract VC funds, so they can make a few million before they exit. It’s no way to run a business, yet it’s now our entire economy. https://www.theverge.com/tldr/915176/nft-metaverse-ai-weirdos
