Not saying it's unrepairable, but sometimes when you're called upon to do an unknown amount of speculative software engineering, it's maybe time to make sure all your data's safe and just reinstall.
In any case I do hope you can bust through this challenge.

@MattMoose I like a challenge, lol. I have customised the living daylights out of this install and was hoping to fix the mistakes made while sleep-deprived on Friday the 13th... But if I go through the logs it appears I did a bit more than just screw up initramfs-tools. It's in a sorry state right now. I'm making a list of the affected packages in an attempt to do a rollback manually. File by file if I have to. It's a puzzle for sure.
