@ivan_herman@w3c.social IMNSHO, anything that contains angle brackets that don't mean "less than" or "greater than" should a) see the error of their ways and repent ASAP, *and* b) at the very least be XML. Just saying.

@ivan_herman@w3c.social Realistically, what's the practical difference, beside whether we put trailing slashes in singular tags? I imagine your average EPUB publisher has a standard template with headers they never change apart from titles, edited dates etc... I certainly don't for all the Fixed-Layout EPUBs I produce.

@ivan_herman@w3c.social I'm gonna respond to the survey too, but my only real concern here is that even if it's permitted, it can't (or shouldn't) be *used*, at least for another 5-10 years. There's a fairly large amount of existing older ebook reader hardware out there which will refuse to display such books, even if they're using an html rendering stack that could handle them fine. It'll be interesting to see how long it will be until Kobo starts accepting the new format in their store, for example. That said, I'm sure Calibre will grow support for converting HTML ebooks to XHTML to load them onto older devices...
