@caseyliss I use SMB file sharing and then the client that I primarily use, Kodi (formerly XBMC) does its own content management. It doesn't sync across devices because each client is independent, but since I only use it with the one device it's perfect for me. I would use Plex, but it doesn't have features I consider must-have. Like the ability to retime audio sync while playing back. Or automatic display of Forced subtitles while subtitles are disabled. (Plex wants you to turn on a separate subtitle track that only has the forced subtitles in it, Kodi looks for Forced subtites in the normal subtitle track and displays them. Much more "Just Works" for me.)

    @troldann @caseyliss same here. Used community tools to clean up and create nfo files for my media so that kodi installs can build local databases as needed. I don't see the need for on the fly transcoding in 2026 (which seems to be the main feature of Plex/Jellyfin?), as even cheap mobile devices seem capable at playing HD video now.
