What’s something you were told was a “social skill” that actually made your life worse as an autistic adult? I have a long list. @autistics

@theautisticcoach@neurodifferent.me Social skill is code for Neurotypical norm.

@theautisticcoach@neurodifferent.me @autistics@fedigroups.social Interrupting a conversation asking what that's about if you have just arrived is rude (while in reality if someone gets annoyed by that *they* are being rude to you).

@theautisticcoach@neurodifferent.me @autistics@fedigroups.social "It's what's on the inside that counts." Apparently this is something people say but don't mean, and actually you need to care a LOT about how things look, and about how you look to others.

  • @theautisticcoach@neurodifferent.me @autistics@fedigroups.social "It's not what you say, it's how you say it." Turns out, I only have one way of saying anything, flat and to the point. I've never used subtext (in speaking, I use it in writing all the damn time. Because. NT audiences). Others have already mentioned the eye contact...thing. "You need to speak up, otherwise you won't get noticed/credit." That one tears me up, as it followed me from high school group projects through to running my own team of IT techs. There are more, but I'm tired. 🫠
