@jamesholden Erm, I'd say, the rectangles are a picture of the sound. As the sinus waveform is stepped due to resolution issues it of course isn't audible as a sinus anymore, it does sound rectangularly distorted. Attaching a sinus at 1KHz below, as you can see (and hear) the steps are already visible - and have audible consequences, but by far not as severe as 10 KHz.
