@neauoire I think you have good connections and with a community that's much closer. I toyed with the idea of becoming an established artist and making a career out of it, on and off in the past few years, and that was one of the reasons I started my website to begin with. while I did meet interesting people through my site, it ultimately didn't really do much for my career pursuits. it doesn't help that I'm quite isolated where I'm at (ironic, given it's a city of millions). I've secretly envied those who seem to be doing quite well in that regard and I've wondered how they got there: consistency perhaps but for how long, or some stroke of luck. the road more traveled of promoting oneself isn't at all enticing though. to me, social media killed the idea of having a portfolio. then AI and vibe coding killed whatever programming and gamedev projects I've been planning. the earliest iteration of my site had short stories, but now I don't see myself wanting to get back to writing. I still have art, but there's nothing to be done with it; and so I'm stuck on what to do, withering in the meantime

@joshavanier @neauoire Your situation is quite similar to mine, having/had a lot of common struggles in 2025. I think you got to do what you would care to do regardless of money, regardless of trends. This is the way to "win" no matter what. Trying to brute force an artistic career messed with my brain so much. Programming is still interesting if you don't listen to the AI hype. "Old" tech and media are still cools. In the age of social media BS, making fanzines is a welcome respite. (btw I love what you're doing with your common place notebook and watercolors). At the same time, the job market for engineers at the moment is terrible. I'm still trying to find a good enough client that is not just shouting AI with foam in the mouth...
