And yes, modern liberals are by definition conservative. Which explains why they think bad systems propped up by right-wingers are mostly fine, they just need a liberal at the top. That's why, for example, so much Dem criticism of Trump is rooted in aesthetics and decorum and Respectability and discomfort. Yes, "liberal elites" are a thing, just not for reasons the right wing believes.
