While not in the market for a new ThinkPad (mine is only around 8 years old), I do appreciate that Lenovo is reading the market and have released a repairable model. Kudos to @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org and @iFixit@mastodon.social @mms@mastodon.bsd.cafe @cstross@wandering.shop https://au.pcmag.com/laptops/115174/i-tried-the-slick-new-thinkpad-x1-carbon-gen-14-its-lenovos-most-repairable-ultraportable-yet

@cousinsd I never realised they *weren't* repairable, I've been fixing mine for years. I think my oldest is ~15 years old. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Always loved how easy they were to dismantle and swap parts... certainly compared to the Sony vaio I had before which was a nightmare to dismantle.

@cousinsd @frameworkcomputer @iFixit @mms @cstross This is because Framework and others have paved the way.

  • @cousinsd @frameworkcomputer @iFixit @mms @cstross Lenovo are starting at extremely unrepairable, notably more so than HP (I haven't tried to open recent Dells) - so they get points for being a bit less worse, but the Framework comparisons seem a bit over the top.

@cousinsd @frameworkcomputer @iFixit @mms @cstross a step in the right direction ( not hard when the bar for repairability for the X1 has historically been on the floor) but I'm confused why the repairability score is 9 / 10 when you can't upgrade the RAM or WiFi chip. Also, the display is probably still glued together, right?

@cousinsd @frameworkcomputer @iFixit @mms @cstross mines 10 years old (x1c4) and has had a new screen and a new keyboard in that time. Not ready to replace it yet but this is good news
