Hot take: Boards of Canada are a second-tier act. I just will never get the hype. I don't mind them, but they're just background music for me, no matter how much I look into that they offer an aesthetic experience that feels like it should talk to me, but never reaches me. Also the kinda hip hop trip hop botched rhythms are a true put off in general for me. It's weird because I love Aphex Twin, Autechre, even stuff like Burial. And ambient music too. But BoC are really mid. #music #idm

Or rather, they also feel very specific, as if it's music made by a bunch of nerds that grew up together during a particular time in a particular place that doesn't belong to me at all.

@mauro That's definitely an interesting take especially since you like the other artists you named so much. I personally love them as well as Aphex Twin and Autechre. But, there's nothing wrong with that! What's your take on Four Tet? Amon Tobin?

  • @mauro never say never. I always thought I just can't listen to Björk, even though I respect her art. Then I gave Debut a try again, and I like it. Personally, I always loved Geogaddi. But I also always loved Hip-Hop, Trip Hop beats. Maybe it has a more sub-conscious vibe than the cleaner sounds of FSOL or CBL. But I love all of them. Klaus Schulze as well.

@mauro I only know one early album from BoC (looked it up: it's Geogaddi) and I think that sound has a unique place in my mind because of the time I stumbled upon it. I was at uni and had all those new impressions that go with uni life (dorms etc) and that sound was just carried across the hallway from somebody's room... I haven't listened to any new BoC stuff though.
