@stavvers The data was known to a geologist who did some classified (or was it commercial, i.e. oil related?) deep sea mapping. They were not allowed to publish the data for a while.
The story is even worse...
(plus who TF has the time to go to all conferences? And back then you didn't get to read all the abstracts online weeks in advance)

@drchaos @stavvers The K-Pg boundary was 65 Million and change years ago, I'm sure the dinosaurs won't mind having waited a few more decades for us to announce that we've found the impact site.
