@atpfm@mastodon.social I did a two-person kayak paddle of roughly 9 km. I had my super old Apple Watch and the other person had an Apple Watch Ultra. We ended up with an 800 m difference in distance covered 😂

@atpfm@mastodon.social I do not believe that Apple ever had ~5 million binned A18 Pros left over from the iPhone. Only a fraction of A18 Pros have errors, and only a fractions of those just have errors on 1 GPU in the ~15% of the die where the GPUs are. I'd bet there are already MacBook Neos with a working GPU disabled. I expect Apple ordered lots of A18 Pros for the Neo, and the binned A18 Pros just helped margins. Apple might be running low on A18 Pros, but I'm confident that Apple has a plan for this.

@atpfm@mastodon.social I had to admit, I chuckled when I heard Casey talk about MacOS being potentially worse than Windows in terms of ad crap. I have a Windows computer, and it sure does like selling me things.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Roon and nugs were mentioned at the top of the show, but not the recent (early March) integration of the nugs catalog into roon: https://blog.roonlabs.com/make-every-night-live-music-night-with-roon-nugs/

@atpfm@mastodon.social Perhaps Apple could sell an A19 Pro with a software-locked core for the same RRP and up-charge for the full chip? Yuck! But not unprecedented in other fields.

@atpfm@mastodon.social @caseyliss@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social the Mac mini rack thing gets more hardcore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2J2MzKjcqY This is called "shucking" (like oysters). I think AWS, MacStadium, etc do this too, but it's on video here at GitHub.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Regarding rewriting software and changing its license: I’d love to see the opposite way, in which large commercial software is rewritten by AI and made open source.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Apple is a company and so we shouldn't be surprised when they act like one. Complaining isn't a good strategy when we keep giving them our money. Talk with our wallets.

@atpfm@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social, to be fair, providing a room for the minis in your house and cooling it is only a half valid reason against it. You could always just install them under the deck…

@atpfm@mastodon.social @caseyliss@mastodon.social Sipeed NanoKVM at ~$30 USD is a more affordable alternative to the GL.iNet Comet. It supports tailscale too. https://github.com/sipeed/NanoKVM https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008257415587.html

@atpfm@mastodon.social @caseyliss@mastodon.social I hope @ironicbadger@techhub.social gets a commission! I bought the exact same KVM a few weeks ago and also love it❤️. Saved me just last week being 350km from home in France: little WoL magic packet magic 🪄

@atpfm@mastodon.social @caseyliss@mastodon.social LPT regarding IP KVM: If you have more than one device you want to use with it, don't buy multiple IP KVMs; instead, buy one multi-device old-school KVM (get used from eBay) and connect its output to the IP KVM. Then switch between KVM inputs using keyboard shortcuts. Depending on the number of devices, this can save a lot of money. I have eight devices connected like that.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Finally got around to listening to @Phonograph@mastodon.social What a joyful 45 minutes. Hadn’t heard Mark Bramhill’s name in a while. Welcome to Macintosh still gets queued up once a year or so for road trips or long flights. My only complaint was that I had forgotten that Tigger = Tootsie Pop Owl, and that led to a wiki rabbit hole. (Didja know he also patented the artificial heart?)

@atpfm@mastodon.social the discussion of ads and how it slowly creeps deep into the way companies think reminds me of this blog (that I writes; #biased) https://www.codevoid.net/ruminations/2025/02/23/the-first-hit-is-free.html
