Thanks everyone! I live in the sticks, and every so often I'm missing a part of something or other that I can fix myself, which usually means ordering from uncle Jeff unfortunately. I'd love to be able to generate these parts myself, which in some weird cost-benefit analysis would mean that the widgets wouldn't have to travel thousands of km to get to me, and of course I could offer this as a public service to my neighbours. I know it's all mental gymnastics, we're fucked and swimming in blood. Maybe I should just admit it's a neat nerdy thing to own, and tell my fam to get it for me for my bday.

@franklinlopez I do not know to what extent this is greenwashing but have heard of filament made of hemp, and there are other bioplastic experiments being done!

@franklinlopez there's some filaments that are made from recycled plastic, printers made of parts made by printers, there's some loopy stuff going on there, but fundamentally, well... it's plastic.

@franklinlopez tbh there’s some alleged biodegradable filaments but they’re basically not forever plastics. The hardest part for me on this is all the waste during printing. The little strings, bits that come off, the drips you clean up. Especially the stringing. In your immediate environment where you print there’s a buildup of tiny plastics. Which… Yeah. It’s not perfect. I would say shipping of crap, the packaging, all the other stuff is probably ecologically more negative than some dudes printing hinges for cabinets or wherever. I’d say let er rip and don’t overthink it.
