@dhobern @KorimakoEcology Interesting thread. If bad actors ever figured out how to flood #iNaturalist with fake accounts and fake observations, that would be a huge headache. I'd like to think that a bot generating lots of implausible observations would quickly get flagged. Citizen science data projects need to be vigilant that people really are people. Also important is basing land management decisions on the consensus of more than one source of data (many observers, many datasets).

@joncounts @KorimakoEcology I've been assuming that the AI would be able to learn enough to generate mostly plausible and habitat-appropriate but fake records. Generating plenty of these would make the observer seem experienced and reliable. This would make it possible to produce others that indicate new populations of rare species outside sites proposed for use by extractive industries. In the case of #iNaturalist, the RG requirements would also require them to fake new photos.
