Honestly can't say I'm surprised. We visited the one in Sherwood Park shortly after they opened; huge selection of premium products, but even what few name-brand products they had were notably more expensive than from any other grocery store.
They might have had a better chance as a smaller concept closer to the Italian Centre or Sunterra (minus the check-kiting fraud) - maybe even smaller - instead of trying to be Costco for rich people.

@Daveography the Italian Centre already exists though. Niche is taken. (Italian Centre has some labour relation issues, but otherwise loved, I think)
