@kirschner @techlore @fsfe @pjitendra i think this drastically undersells the concern regarding california and now US federal law. it's correct that these are not age verification bills per se—they create and in fact impose a requirement for "OS vendors" to perform large-scale surveillance of their users in a way that cannot be opted out. this is from the text of the law, which is markedly distinct from any analysis i've read of it, particularly the california bill's determination of "internal" information.

@kirschner @techlore @fsfe @pjitendra Excellent article. The #MidnightBSD situation is super absurd. They decided to become proprietary software over this by punishing users from the "wrong" countries. 🤦 I also like the radical idea that young people are still people who have agency. Good calling out that esp. potentially young devs are being punished by the age verification bullshit.

@kirschner @techlore @fsfe @pjitendra Requiring legal IDs is a tiny step from storing those IDs in a database and tracking the ID holder. I'd be extremely reluctant to use any platform requiring such intrusion.
