@juergen_hubert@mementomori.social In real life, it's quite different, and you know that. The digital equivalent of "walking away" would be ignoring a post or a person, or putting the account of the person on silence so one doesn't have to read them any longer. Blocking a person goes much further, and this is something that many social media users do not understand. On Mastodon, you can also block a whole server. And I think this is something that only admins should be allowed to do. Not users ...

@AndyGER@mastodon.social @juergen_hubert@mementomori.social So you dislike freedom and control over your own experience, and think no-one else should have that either. Gotcha hahaha 🤣

  • @AndyGER@mastodon.social "I do not want this person in my life" means cutting someone out of your life entirely. If you merely mute someone, you still give them the opportunity to interact with your posts - and while you might not see these posts directly, your followers will, and you will see their replies. This is a very popular tactic among harassers, and a major reason why muting someone is not enough. I see _absolutely_ no ethical problem with the block function. This includes blocking entire instances. You and your admin might have different definitions of what is or what is not appropriate in online interactions - and in fact, expecting users and admins to be 100% aligned on this is unrealistic. So in my view, it's totally fine if admins focus on the most grievous offenders among instances, and then individual users can go further to protect themselves and their peace of mind. If this means blocking entire instances, then so be it. _They_ are the experts on what they need or do not need in their own lives, and I am not going to tell them that they are doing social media wrong.

@AndyGER @juergen_hubert 😬 Maybe it be that your boundaries differ from other people? And does everybody need to have the same boundaries? Does anybody get to tell you how you set your boundaries? And can you tell someone how to set theirs? When someone says no do you debate it or respect it? What is healthy for you? Might your healhty be diffferent than my healthy? How does it make you feel when you get blocked? What is your intention when debating someone? And does it work for you?
