First of all, the defaults are anything but sensible. For example footnotes (by default) do not include a space after the number, a readability nightmare. Justification is by default 100% on everything, which is not the point of justified text. The default placement of page numbers (and the footer in general) is also not great.
You want to change that? Too bad the menus are a nightmare! 2/n

The setting to change footnote formatting? No, not in "Format" or "Styles", but in the global menu "Tools" as "Footnote/Endnote settings" right next to the "Mail Merge Wizard". Thats nuts. It took me an online search to find that!
