@KentNavalesi If mastodon.social defederates (not just silences/limits) some smaller instance the users of that smaller instance won't be able to even follow users from m.s with an account on that smaller instance. It's of course nowhere near as dominant as Bluesky's corporate servers but that's not to say it wouldn't be better for it to be less so. It's good that there are plans for the Mastodon website to direct people to more instances.

    @ikuturso I see. So defederation can be a form of leverage for sufficiently large instances (allow our content or we'll defederate, etc.), and on that point mastodon's only advantage over BS is that the network is more dispersed. I asked because I wonder if Bluesky's switch to a VC CEO has anything to do with the success of blacksky and the announcement of Eurosky. Are they trying to bake in some enshittification before the network gets too dispersed?

    @ikuturso @KentNavalesi Fedi is much bigger than mastodon.social. Actually many people put the question whether they have to block it, due to their poor moderation.
