I've had a few fellow software folk tell me that they're thinking about getting out of software because of LLMs. They find them to be tiring as well as deeply problematic for lots of other reasons. I've been telling them that they should do what's best for their sanity, but that they should also stick to software development if they can. Once the LLM fad passes (yes, it's a fad, we're still very much in the Fuck Around stage and the Find Out will produce regulations from the body counts), actual software engineers will become VERY high demand and will have the opportunity to mentor folk getting started. There's damage that can be repaired, and folk with good experience and skills now are the only folk that can help repair things. I'd recommend folk adopt either the Mel Brooks approach or the Malicious Compliance approach for now, if they can. This kind of crap happened in the past, and we can learn from it. (Remember when aluminum wires were a popular option for homes? Yeah, there's a reason those stopped being an option.)
