@alienmelon yessss I feel this too! Little Big Adventure may seem like a cutesy sort of thing, but it's really quite scary as it's about being on the run from the law while living under an oppressive regime. But what makes it really scary is the way controls are weirdly laggy, so if you want to run away it takes a while to get up to speed. And then when you're running it's scary because hitting a wall will cost you health. It's brutal af, but it really fits with the theme of being helpless!

@Tijn i love this example. adding friction like this to communicate these feelings when moving is another thing i think you really only get in games.

@Tijn @alienmelon not to mention how, because of how you temporarily lose movement control when hit, it becomes easy to accidentally get into a position where you're repeatedly attacked without any way to escape IIRC the "recoil" animation always pushes you backwards from the direction you're facing, so trying to run away can end up pushing you back towards your attacker That game is stressful as helllll

  • @Tijn @alienmelon This. Few games land that exact feeling of being helpless and alone as the state tries to crush you underfoot. I love how the controls in LBA feel borderline unfair at times. There are other nice touches; sometimes if you talk to a normal-looking citizen they will rat you out to the fash, leading to a beating or a trip to jail.
