Also, appliances were *way* more expensive – both to purchase and (thanks to wasteful energy etc. usage) to operate. [Bens Appliances and Junk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz21ZF9eQOk) has a good video on this that I imagine a lot of people are drawing on in this thread.
