“Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: […] like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.” —Jonathan Swift

Seattle definitely isn’t the #4 most major city or CSA. It’s a great city and has major businesses, but Seattle probably sits behind Dallas–Fort Worth. All jokes about fairness aside: California gets to have this one.

Here’s the Gamers Nexus report. TechRadar is a shitty content mill that, in this case, basically just half-asses a summary of the GN video and then embeds a few Reddit comments.

  • Bad news, folks

Book is “A Concise History of Korea: From Antiquity to the Present” by Michael J. Seth, 2nd. edition (2016). It’s very well-put-together and is incredibly fascinating. The Neolithic stuff at the beginning of the first chapter (“The Origins”) starts out a bit dull (kind of by necessity), but I was hooked by Chapter 2 (“The Period of the Three Kingdoms, Fourth Century to 676”). Genuinely fantastic and now one of my favorite nonfiction books I’ve ever read. (I made the mistake of not reading the Ap...

  • I just realized that OsmAnd has 3D buildings now!

Okay, I know “now” is a couple months out-of-date, but I didn’t know this until today, so I figured some other people might not either. I have both OsmAnd and CoMaps, and I generally prefer OsmAnd for its extensive customizability, Carto render, and the fact it can be kept more up-to-date. So it surprised me it didn’t have the option to view 3D buildings, since OSM for a long time now has kept track of information like building levels (building:levels), height (height), and even building parts...

  • TIL 4Kids Entertainment, Inc., behind infamous English dubs of shows such as One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Pokémon, traded on the New York Stock Exchange as 'KDE'

This isn’t riveting, insightful information. I just figured there were enough Linux nerds on Lemmy to find this funny.

They do develop tumors, which the paper discusses.

In another life, I think this kid would be holding a $30 microphone, staring into his Galaxy A56 camera, and reading a low-quality, half-generated YouTube video essay script about why Call of Duty peaked with Black Ops.

Listen, okay, over 90% of your oh-so-“natural” hedgehog-based pencils are dyed with carcinogenic chromium and act as an environmental contaminant when thrown away. At worst, it’s a lateral change to use plastic.

This is what a competent encyclopedic treatment of algebra looks like by comparison. The other algebra article fucks up from the jump, because the goal of an encyclopedic treatment of algebra is not to teach someone the mechanics of solving a handful of elementary algebra problems (you can as a small aid, but making it nearly the entire article is failing the assignment completely). It’s to cover what algebra is, its various subfields, its history, its applications, its relationships to other...

“Junk food as a reward” is something every expert I’ve ever heard talk about it says is a terrible idea. More generally, “Food as a reward” undermines healthy eating. That brushes up against “well then when should I eat junk food? never?”, and that’s something I can’t tell you. The most balanced mindset might be to treat it like many treat alcohol – both poison to your body – and eat something junky occasionally when you’re out with friends or just want to relax one night. But tying it into...

I think you’re in the same boat I am where I fucking haaaaaaate the culture on link aggregators (and probably other social media) where people will bitch and moan to no end that their preferred format (publicly reacting to disconnected headlines whose articles they haven’t read) isn’t giving them literally all the information they need to form a cogent opinion. “I had time to write a 300-word short essay about this headline, but I’m going to whine if I get called for something in the first par...
