Dumb question: This project I'm working on has skill trees based on in-game factions/cultures. So the more points you put into a specific tree, its really you becoming more acclimated to that specific faction and understanding what they do and why. Would it be messed up/frustrating/interesting to have skill trees that are damaged or entirely inaccessible because that culture or knowledge has been lost?

  • My only(?) point of reference would be like the 6th Archstone in Demon's Souls - A portal that goes to the land of giants that's entirely inaccessible because that area has been wholly swallowed by the colorless fog. The door is there though, but its clearly broken and beyond repair. The idea here would be the same - You knew they once existed and were important pieces to the bigger picture, but for [story] they've been cut off or have relatively disappeared.

@justdaveisfine@mastodon.gamedev.place If a single playthrough is more than 10 hours: I personally hate this. From a balance and lore perspective though I absolutely love it.
